Image: It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Emeritus Professor Ishwar Basawa, who retired from the UGA Department of Statistics in 2010. Professor Basawa was a highly valued member of our department, recognized for his outstanding contributions to teaching, research, mentorship, and leadership. He served as Interim Department Head from 2000 to 2003, guiding the department through a challenging transition as it sought new leadership. Despite the formidable internal challenges of this period, the department sustained an exceptional level of scholarly activity and productivity. Professor Basawa’s influential work, Statistical Inference for Stochastic Processes, coauthored with B.L.S. Prakasa Rao, left a lasting impact, and his unwavering dedication to his students, research, and service continues to inspire many, including current faculty of the Department. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Basawa was a treasured friend and mentor, admired for his kindness, wisdom, sense of humor, and generosity. He embodied the qualities of a true gentleman, earning the deep respect and affection of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
