You will go through a 2-hour training where you will learn about the project and how it benefits the community (and get a free meal!). You will then be assigned to a team of 2-4 students and matched up with a neighborhood leader. Each team will be assigned to a neighborhood in the city where you will go to randomly sampled households, to collect survey data. Other volunteer opportunities include social media and website work. (1)Undergraduate Workshop October 24-25, 2016 (Apply by September 9, 2016)In addition to an overview of current and planned SAMSI Research Programs, the program topic on Statistical, Mathematical and Computational Methods for Astronomy (ASTRO) will be covered in some depth. The workshop will focus on Population Modeling & Signal Separation for Exoplanets & Gravitational Waves (GW) and will feature introductory lectures on statistical methodology for interpreting detection of exoplanets, GWs, as well as using those to infer the underlying population of planetary systems and GW sources.(2)Undergraduate Workshop February 27-28, 2017 (Apply by January 20, 2017)In addition to an overview of current and planned SAMSI Research Programs, the program topic Optimization (OPT) will be covered in some depth. The workshop will focus on optimization methods for large-scale statistical analysis and will feature introductory lectures on statistical inverse problems, E/M and M/M algorithms and semidefinite programming.(3)Interdisciplinary Workshop for Undergraduate Students May 14-19, 2017 (Apply by March 27, 2017)This week long workshop will provide an introduction to applied mathematical and statistical research in the area of astronomy and optimization. For a good part of the week, students, in teams of 3 or 4, will use data from different sources to investigate a variety of questions related to several exciting and emerging area of research ranging from the data produced by both ground-based and space-based astronomical surveys at many wave-bands to cosmology, exoplanets, gravitational waves and synoptic surveys. The students will also explore the recent developments in optimization including semidefinite programming, Bayesian optimization and decision analysis, Mixed-integer PDE-constrained optimization etc. Finally, student teams will be prepared to make short presentations on the last day of the workshop, and have the option of having their final presentations reside on the SAMSI website. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Undergraduate scholarships are for 6 to 12 months abroad, and graduate fellowships are for 3 to 24 months in the U.S. and abroad. There is a minimum one-year government service requirement for Boren recipients after graduation.
